Some things end not because they fail, but because they are finished. Yesterday, we held our 155th and final Five Words In Zoom call. It was a weekly community I built to help people bet on themselves, start businesses, and grow ideas into something real. Three years of lessons shared, risks taken, businesses started, confidence built. And then I did something that surprised a few people. I shut it down. Not because it failed.
Not because I was tired.
Not because I stopped believing in it. I shut it down because it was finished. When I started Five Words In, I committed to three years. Not forever. Not “we’ll see how it goes.” Three years. Mission accomplished. Here’s what I’ve learned. Most people are good at starting. Very few are good at finishing. We drag things past their season.
We hold onto roles we have outgrown.
We keep commitments long after the assignment is complete. Not because we are called to stay, but because we are afraid. Afraid of what people will think.
Afraid of what comes next. But sometimes leadership is quiet. You close a door with gratitude.
You thank it for what it built in you.
And you walk forward lighter. When I canceled the subscription yesterday, I did not feel loss. I felt clarity. It felt like setting down a backpack I had carried faithfully. Not because it was crushing me, but because the hike had ended. Five Words In was never about tactics or marketing plans. It was about belief.
Betting on yourself.
Taking risks.
Building something instead of waiting to be chosen. That message does not disappear just because a Zoom room closes. It simply changes form. And I am carrying that same belief into what comes next. So let me ask you something. Is there something in your life that is finished, but you have not admitted it yet? A role?
A rhythm?
An obligation you are carrying out of guilt instead of calling? You do not have to blow everything up. But you do have permission to close what has run its course. Finishing well is not quitting. It is leadership. You get one life.
